Engine reconditioning
Engine reconditioning is the precision machining that sits at the heart of every quality rebuild. Heads are skimmed and pressure tested, blocks are bored and honed, crankshafts are ground and polished. Because the machine work is done in house, nothing leaves our control and nothing is farmed out to a third party.

The word reconditioned gets used loosely in the motor trade, often to describe a used engine that has been cleaned and painted. That is not reconditioning. Real reconditioning means returning every critical surface to the tolerances the manufacturer specified. A cylinder head that has warped by a fraction of a millimetre gets skimmed flat. A bore that has worn oval gets bored and honed to size. A crankshaft journal that has scored gets ground and polished to the next undersize, with matching OEM bearings to suit.
This is skilled work and it is where our 45 plus years of engine experience really shows. Measure twice, machine once, and never send a part out that you would not fit to your own vehicle. Every machined component is measured again after machining and the figures are recorded as part of your photographic rebuild report.
Reconditioning is usually one part of a wider engine rebuild, but we also carry out standalone machine work for customers and trade garages who need a head skimmed, a block bored or a crank ground to standard.
Many garages that offer engine work send the machining out to a third party and wait days for it to come back. That adds time, cost and a break in accountability. Our machine shop sits in the workshop, so the engineer who stripped your engine is the person who machines it and the person who rebuilds it. One team, one standard, one point of responsibility.
It also means honest answers. If a head is cracked beyond repair, the pressure test shows it and you see it on the video inspection. If a block can be saved with a rebore, we save it. Repair rather than unnecessarily replace applies to components just as much as it applies to whole engines.
Around half of our machine shop work comes from other garages who trust us with their customers’ engines. The other half comes from drivers who found us after an engine repair turned into something bigger. Both get the same standard of work, the same OEM parts and the same documentation.
If your vehicle has overheated and you suspect a warped head, or your engine has lost compression and you suspect bore wear, call and talk it through. A compression test and a pressure test answer most questions quickly, and the quote for any machining work is fixed before we start.
The process
Call or send the form and describe the symptoms. A rattle, smoke, a warning light or a complete failure. We will ask a few questions about the vehicle and give you an honest first view over the phone.
Our collection service picks the vehicle up directly from your home, your workplace or your garage, anywhere in the UK. Non runners are no problem. Recovery to one of our workshops is all part of the service.
We dismantle the engine and record a video inspection of every component. You see exactly what failed and why before you spend a penny on parts. Then you approve a fixed written quote.
Our engineers rebuild the engine with OEM parts and photograph every stage. The photographic rebuild report becomes your record of the work and supports your warranty and the vehicle’s resale value.
Every rebuild is test certified before the engine leaves the workshop. We return the vehicle to your door with the report, the certification and a 12 month warranty that transfers to the next keeper.
