The timing chain or belt keeps the top and bottom of your engine in step. The crankshaft turns the pistons, the camshaft opens the valves, and the chain or belt makes sure the two never meet. On almost every modern engine, if that synchronisation is lost, the pistons hit the valves. The valves bend, the guides crack, the pistons can be punched through and the cylinder head is often damaged beyond simple repair. A component that costs a few hundred pounds to replace becomes an engine that costs thousands to rebuild.
That is why we are so direct about this subject. As Ford EcoBoost wet belt specialists we have seen hundreds of engines destroyed by a part that costs less than a set of tyres. Almost every one of those failures was preventable.
A timing chain does not snap because it is weak. It fails because it has stretched over tens of thousands of miles, and the single biggest cause of stretch is old oil. Modern long service intervals of eighteen thousand miles or more are kind to service budgets and cruel to chains. Oil degrades, its additives deplete and the chain’s pins and rollers wear faster. Every extra thousand miles on tired oil accelerates the wear. We recommend halving the manufacturer interval on any chain driven engine that matters to you.
The chain is only one part of the system. Hydraulic tensioners keep it tight and plastic guides keep it aligned. Tensioners rely on clean oil pressure, and guides wear down over time. A worn tensioner lets a healthy chain slap and rattle, and a broken guide can let the chain jump a tooth even when the chain itself is fine. When we replace a chain we always replace the tensioners and guides with OEM parts, because fitting a new chain to worn hardware is money wasted.
The classic early warning of chain wear is a metallic rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. It happens because the tensioner takes a moment to build oil pressure. Thousands of UK drivers hear that rattle every morning and turn the radio up. The rattle is the engine asking for help while the repair is still cheap. Once the chain jumps or snaps, the valves meet the pistons and a maintenance job becomes a rebuild.
Wet belts, fitted to engines like the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and the Peugeot Citroen 1.2 PureTech, run inside the engine bathed in oil. The idea was quieter running and lower friction. The reality is that the belt material slowly breaks down in hot oil and sheds debris. That debris collects in the oil pickup strainer and restricts oil flow. The engine does not die because the belt snapped. It dies of oil starvation while the belt is still intact. This is why we inspect the pickup on every wet belt job and why the correct oil grade matters so much.
Dry cam belts and wet belts both have a life, measured in years as well as miles. A belt that is rated for ten years or one hundred and fifty thousand miles is not immortal at nine years and low mileage. Rubber ages whether the car is used or not. We see belt failures on low mileage cars that simply got old, and on high mileage cars where the interval was stretched to save money. The saving never survives contact with a bent valve.
On dry belt engines, oil or coolant leaking onto the belt destroys it quickly. A weeping cam seal or water pump is not a minor drip, it is a belt killer. Tensioner and idler bearings also fail, and when one seizes the belt shreds in seconds. This is why a proper belt replacement always includes the tensioners, idlers and water pump. Replacing only the belt is a false economy that we refuse to offer.
