Three things decide where your quote lands. The first is the engine itself. A small three cylinder petrol has fewer parts than a six cylinder diesel, and parts prices vary between manufacturers. The second is the damage. A wet belt that was caught early may only need a top end repair, while a seized bottom end needs bearings, pistons and machining. The third is parts availability, although OEM parts for the engines we see most are usually on the shelf.
What never changes is the structure. You approve a fixed written quote after the video inspection of the dismantled engine, and that is the price. If we find something unexpected during the rebuild, which is rare once an engine is fully stripped, we stop and talk to you before doing anything about it.
A used engine from a breaker might be quoted at a few hundred pounds less than a rebuild, but the comparison is not honest. The used engine comes with an unknown history, no meaningful warranty and no documentation. If it turns out to be faulty, and plenty do, you pay the fitting labour twice. Once to put it in and once to take it out. Then you still need the rebuild you should have had in the first place.
